Twenty-seven Douglas County School District students have been named National Merit Scholarship semifinalists, more than doubling the district's 12 semifinalists from a year ago.

Fewer than 1 percent of U.S. high school seniors become National Merit semifinalists, who compete for 7,500 scholarships worth more than $31 million. The goal of the National Merit Scholarship Corp. is to honor the nation's scholastic champions and encourage the pursuit of academic excellence.

Three types of National Merit scholarships will be offered in spring 2019 — 2,500 National Merit scholarships, 1,000 corporate-sponsored merit scholarships and 4,000 college-sponsored merit scholarships.
