Learn about the first integrated steel mill west of the Mississippi River. Colorado Fuel and Iron Company (CF&I) attracted immigrants from around the world to its mill and mines where 42 different languages were spoken. CF&I began in 1872 with the development of the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad and produced its first steel in 1880. At one time, CF&I was the largest land owner and the largest employer in Colorado.

Now its history is cataloged in the nationally recognized Colorado Fuel and Iron Company Collection housed at the Steelworks Center of the West. The vast CF&I archives were donated in January 2003 to the Bessemer Historical Society which is now known as the Steelworks Center of the West.

The archives include over 100,000 photographs, more than 150 films, 30,000 maps and drawings, hundreds of ledgers, and internal publications. Approximately 6,000 cubic feet of records document steel production, mining, geological records, labor relations, land and water resources, employee records, purchase orders, sales orders, invoices, work orders, executive memorandum, correspondence, and more documentation of the company’s rich history.

Presenter Victoria Miller is the curator of the Steelworks Museum. Along with her staff, the Steelworks Center of the West provides continuing education to the public through the preservation of historic archives, artifacts, and buildings of the CF&I.

Foothills Genealogical Society supports genealogical research with educational programs, classes and field trips and preserves and publishes historical records from Clear Creek, Gilpin, Jefferson and Park counties.
