Castle Rock CBD shop nears first anniversary

Business owners aim to offer hemp expertise to customers

Castle Rock couple Karen and Mark Yokley opened Hemp Victory Garden in town nearly one year ago to offer people a store specializing in CBD products, they said. CBD is a cannabis derivative with no more than .3% of THC, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

The store opened on Dec. 7, 2018 at 222 Front St. and will hold a celebration on Dec. 7 and 8 this year for its one-year anniversary. They'll open one hour early, at 11 a.m., and customers can take part in drawings and giveaways, said co-owner Mark Yokley.

Mark Yokley spoke with Colorado Community Media about the shop's first year running.

The first year

Yokley said the shop has built a base of customers that visit at least two to three times a month, or more. They also get people looking to learn about CBD or try it for the first time.

“It's been really doing well. In the year that we've been here, every month we kind of meet our goals and set our goals a little bit higher for the next month,” he said.

Who's buying

Most people who come to the shop are looking to treat three main things, he said. Stress, anxiety or sleep issues. Some of them are looking for alternatives to pharmaceuticals.

“Our demographics, you would think that they would be a lot of young people, but to be honest our demographics are for the main part 50 or older,” he said.

Where to buy

Yokley believes they own the only brick-and-mortar store dedicated to CBD products in Castle Rock. CBD can be purchased at a number of stores, including drugstores or the supermarket, and smoke shops throughout town.

The Yokleys try to stand out by informing people about CBD and helping them learn about what each product provides, something people might not get at a drugstore or grocery store, he said.

“There's a lot of places that are selling it, but I think our niche in the market is education,” he said.

What they sell

The majority of Hemp Victory Garden products contain .03% THC, meaning there is no psychoactive effect. From tinctures, to water soluble products, to gummies and smokable CBD, they try to carry a robust offering of CBD, Yokley said.

“People want to be able to use the product but they don't want it to interfere with their lives,” he said, adding their motto is “healing without the high.”
