Property taxes for the next year are now finalized after the Douglas County Board of Commissioners approved taxing district mill levies during a Dec. 20 special business meeting.
The rates that will be applied to each property are listed on the county assessor’s website along with comparisons to previous year’s rates.
Mill levies make up the final part of the property tax formula, which also factors in property values and an assessment rate set by the state.
During the meeting, commissioner Lora Thomas referenced a recent series of articles from the Denver Post about metro districts.
“While I think there are some metro districts that have mill levies that are just way too high, I don’t live in those metro districts and so I don’t elect the people who are responsible for those mill levies,” she said. “I do pay attention to where I live.”
Thomas recommended people look at their districts’ mill levies compared to others.
“This is where a lot of the tax on the bill that they’re going to get next month are due,” she said.
There are 292 taxing districts in the county. As of this year, they submitted their mills online to avoid an error like what happened last year when nearly 8,000 people were sent incorrect bills, said Douglas County budget director Martha Marshall.
The process is now fully automated, she said.
“I truly didn’t think it was possible, I thought it was too good to be true,” she said. “Seven months later, here we are… It’s truly amazing.”
All but one of the districts entered their information through the mill levy application, she said.
